Products with the latest technology consist of many components that allow for deterioration from the start. This study discusses the effect of the market life cycle, as indicated by the trapezoidal demand rate, on deteriorating item inventory policies. This study will provide new insights into inventory policy. Mathematical models with a non-linear generalized reduced gradient approach can find the optimal end of the selling period and the order size to achieve maximum profit.     Globalization of business and volatility of financial markets has catapulted ‘cycle-time’ as a key indicator of operational efficiency in business processes. Systems automation holds the promise to augment the ability of business and healthcare networks to rapidly adapt to changes or respond, with minimal human intervention, under ideal conditions. Currently, system of systems (SOS) or organization of networks contribute minimally in making decisions because collaboration remains elusive due the challenges of complexity. Convergence and maturity of research offers the potential for a paradigm shift in interoperability. This paper explores some of these trends and related technologies. Irrespective of the characteristics of information systems, the development of various industry-contributed ontologies for knowledge and decision layers, may spur self-organizing SOS to increase the ability to sense and respond.     Identification of kinectin as a novel Behçet's disease autoantigen

    There has been some evidence that Behçet's disease (BD) has a significant autoimmune component but the molecular identity of putative autoantigens has not been well characterized. In the initial analysis of the autoantibody profile in 39 Chinese BD patients, autoantibodies to cellular proteins were uncovered in 23% as determined by immunoblotting. We have now identified one of the major autoantibody specificities using expression cloning. Serum from a BD patient was used as a probe to immunoscreen a λZAP expression cDNA library. Candidate autoantigen cDNAs were characterized by direct nucleotide sequencing and their expressed products were examined for reactivity to the entire panel of BD sera using immunoprecipitation. Reactivity was also examined with normal control sera and disease control sera from patients with lupus and Sjögren's syndrome. Six independent candidate clones were isolated from the cDNA library screen and were identified as overlapping partial human kinectin cDNAs. The finding that kinectin was an autoantigen was verified in 9 out of 39 (23%) BD patient sera by immunoprecipitation of the in vitro translation products. Sera from controls showed no reactivity. The significance of kinectin as a participant in autoimmune pathogenesis in BD and the potential use of autoantibody to kinectin in serodiagnostics are discussed

    Cytogenetics, with its fundamental role in the field of genetic investigation, continues to be an indispensable tool for studying phylogenetics, given that currently molecular evolutionary analyses are more commonly utilized. Chromosomal evolution indicated that genomic evolution occurs at the level of chromosomal segments, namely, the genomic blocks in the size of Mb‐level. The recombination of homologous blocks, through the mechanisms of insertion, translocation, inversion, and breakage, has been proven to be a major mechanism of speciation and subspecies differentiation. Meanwhile, molecular cytogenetics (fluorescence in situ hybridization‐based methodologies) had been already widely applied in studying plant genetics since polyploidy is common in plant evolution and speciation. It is now recognized that comparative cytogenetic studies can be used to explore the plausible phylogenetic relationships of the extant mammalian species by reconstructing the ancestral karyotypes of certain lineages.     Association of the shuffling of Streptococcus pyogenes clones and the fluctuation of scarlet fever cases between 2000 and 2006 in central Taiwan

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The number of scarlet fever occurrences reported between 2000 and 2006 fluctuated considerably in central Taiwan and throughout the nation. Isolates of <it>Streptococcus pyogenes </it>were collected from scarlet fever patients in central Taiwan and were characterized by <it>emm </it>sequencing and a standardized pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method. National weekly report data were collected for investigating epidemiological trends.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 23 <it>emm </it>types were identified in 1,218 <it>S. pyogenes </it>isolates. The five most prevalent <it>emm </it>types were <it>emm</it>12 (50.4%), <it>emm</it>4 (23.2%), <it>emm</it>1 (16.4%), <it>emm</it>6 (3.8%) and <it>emm</it>22 (3.0%). PFGE analysis with <it>Sma</it>I suggested that, with a few exceptions, strains with a common <it>emm </it>type belonged to the same clone. There were two large <it>emm</it>12 clones, one with DNA resistant to cleavage by <it>Sma</it>I. Each prevalent <it>emm </it>clone had major PFGE strain(s) and many minor strains. Most of the minor strains emerged in the population and disappeared soon after. Even some major strains remained prevalent for only 2–3 years before declining. The large fluctuation of scarlet fever cases between 2000 and 2006 was associated with the shuffling of six prevalent <it>emm </it>clones. In 2003, the dramatic drop in scarlet fever cases in central Taiwan and throughout the whole country was associated with the occurrence of a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak that occurred between late-February and mid-June in Taiwan.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The occurrences of scarlet fever in central Taiwan in 2000–2006 were primarily caused by five <it>emm </it>types, which accounted for 96.8% of the isolates collected. Most of the <it>S. pyogenes </it>strains (as defined by PFGE genotypes) emerged and lasted for only a few years. The fluctuation in the number of scarlet fever cases during the seven years can be primarily attributed to the shuffling of six prevalent <it>emm </it>clones and to the SARS outbreak in 2003.</p

    Species and sex comparisons of karyotype and genome size in two <em>Kurixalus tree</em> frogs (Anura, Rhacophoridae)

    Kurixalus is a rhacophorid genus of tree frogs that are similar in morphology but vary in reproductive behavior. We investigated the cytogenetic features and genome size using conventional G-banding, C-banding and silver-staining techniques, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and flow cytometry in two representatives of Kurixalus (K. eiffingeri Boettger, 1895 and K. idiootocus Kuramoto and Wang, 1987) and compared the data between species and sex. The two Kurixalus species share a diploid chromosome number 2n = 26 and fundamental number FN = 52. Prominent differences between species were noted in the distribution of secondary constriction (SC)/nucleolus organizer region (NOR) and dense heterochromatin. Other interspecies differences including variations in the number of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes and staining intensity of heterochromatin were also found. The cytogenetic results are consistent with the observed differences in their genome sizes. FISH with telomeric motif (TTAGGG)n for both species detected signals in the terminal regions. Intersex comparisons revealed no differences in terms of cytogenetic features and genome size in the two species. Despite the apparent highly conserved diploid chromosome number, data on the karyotype microstructure characterize the cytogenetic profile of the two Kurixalus species that contribute to clarification of the chromosomal homologies and the rearrangement mechanisms occurring during the karyotype evolution of Kurixalus. No heteromorphic chromosome pair in both species is consistent with the view that homomorphic sex chromosome is common in amphibians
